When the 7-Eleven clerk handed Jacqueline Brady a $5 Power 5’s Scratchers ticket, the Compton resident knew there had been some unfortunate miscommunication! “I didn’t want that ticket! I wanted the ($5) 20X the Money game,” Brady said with a laugh.
You guessed it. The Power 5’s ticket that she didn’t want turned out to be a $555,555 top-prize winner! And to think – she came oh-so-close to telling the clerk that she didn’t want it! “He had this look on his face like you better take this ticket – I already rang it up! They don’t like to tear them off if you don’t buy them!” Brady explained.
It’s a good thing she didn’t change her mind! “That was a close call! I almost didn’t buy it. So, whoever would have bought this ticket next would have had this money! Thank you Jesus, it was for me and I got it,” Brady said, clearly relieved.
The stars must have been aligned for Brady on November 20 when she bought her winning ticket. Not only did she end up with more than half a million dollars on a game she didn’t even want, but get this – the Inglewood 7-Eleven where she stopped was a completely last-minute decision!
“I was on my way to work. I work with developmentally disabled adults. Every Sunday night I work the over-night and normally stop at a little donut shop and buy some scratch-off tickets. But I thought, ‘No don’t get that icing because you’re going to get acid tonight,’” Brady remembered. “It wasn’t meant for me to stop there!” So instead, she drove to a different store – the 7-Eleven located at 3018 West Manchester Boulevard in Inglewood (Los Angeles County) – and ended up striking it rich!
Besides the Power 5’s game, Brady says she bought a few other Scratchers tickets – ones she actually wanted – and took them all to work. She started scratching those once her clients went to bed, saving the Power 5’s for last – because again, she really didn’t want that one!
None of the tickets she specifically wanted turned out to be winners. So, she started on the Power 5’s! “I was sitting in the dark a little bit. I saw the ‘555’ and thought I’d won $555. Then I looked again!” Brady recalled. “I turned the lights on to make sure I was seeing what I was seeing. I looked again and screamed, ‘I won a half million! Not me!’ I was talking to myself. I did kind of curse a little,” Brady added with a big laugh. “I tried not to wake the whole house!”
Who in the world could blame her for being ecstatic?! She won more than half a million dollars on a ticket she didn’t want from a California Lottery retail location she normally doesn’t buy from! “Just yesterday I was saying that I wonder what it would feel like to be able to buy anything I wanted!” Brady said. “I’ve been playing since the Lottery started. Oh, my God!”
The 59-year-old plans on buying her dream car. “A Tahoe or the GMC Denali – black with tinted windows!” I’m also going to help everyone who has helped me!”
